La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica
Who?
Spanish Honor Society is open to all students who have passed through the first semester of Spanish III. These students must have a Spanish GPA of 3.5 or better and an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. Additionally, applicants must show interest in the Spanish language by participating in at least three Spanish Club activities before being admitted to the Spanish Honor Society. One of the three activities must be an immersion experience. There are 3 opportunities each year to fulfill this requirement.
What?
The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese founded the Spanish Honor Society in 1953 for the students of North American secondary schools, and the AHS chapter was established in 1989. The name of this chapter is Lope de Vega, and our motto is "All Together".
In addition to monthly meetings, the Spanish Honor Society plans and carries out various activities each year. Past activities have included:
· Señor Tomás Restaurant
· Movie night (Milwaukee)
· Scavenger Hunt
· Induction Ceremony
· Immersion Night
· Folk Fair (Milwaukee)
· Service projects in Waukesha
Opportunities for leadership are also available. Each year members elect a President, Vice-president, and Secretary who direct and help carry out the monthly meetings and various activities in cooperation with the club members and advisor.
When?
The Spanish SHH holds monthly meetings in the North Campus Junior Study Hall before school (6:50 am). These are announced through e-mail and text reminders. We also have "tertulias" at Sr. Tomás restaurant six times a year from 7-8:00 p.m. on scheduled Monday or Tuesdays.
Why?
Being a member of the Spanish Honor Society is a privilege given only to those members who have shown their dedication to the Spanish language through academic excellence and pursuit of extra opportunities to use the language. This honor society offers an advanced level of activities and companionship to those who enjoy the language and culture.
How?
Any student who has met the grade point average requirements is able to apply in the spring. It is their option to fill out the application. The application includes a statement of intended use of Spanish, a list of Spanish Club activities the student has participated in, teacher recommendations, etc. All students who complete the application process and meet the requirements for GPA status and Spanish Club participation will be accepted to the honor society. All students of Spanish are encouraged to meet the necessary requirements to become members.
